[edit] Item Effect

The Screw Attack is an item from the Metroid series, it appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee and then again in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. While a character has a Screw Attack, they will perform Samus's Up B move, the Screw Attack, whenever they jump which makes them spin around and damaging anyone they touch. In Melee when a player picked up a Screw Attack they held onto it, and would only perform Screw Attacks while they held it. Players could also throw it at people forcing them to do a Screw Attack which used up all their jumps. This was a good way to set up attacks.

In Brawl, the player wears the Screw Attack as a badge which falls off after a period of time. Thus they can still hold other items and perform normal attacks while they are under its effect; however this also means the ability to throw it at opponents is lost.

[edit] Strategy

The strategy with the Screw Attack varies greatly between Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In Melee, you can't use any of your normal A attacks unless you wish to throw the Screw Attack at someone. Since throwing the Screw Attack will make your opponent perform the equivalent of Samus's recovery move, they are wide open to attacks. This is a great set up to a strong attack that requires precision timing since the target will be unable to do much of anything to stop the attack. However, if the opponent you hit is too close, you will be taken up along with them, much like Samus's recovery move works.

In Brawl, the Screw Attack is an equip item, so you can no longer throw it to others. However, this also lets you use all of your standard attacks, grab another item, and even perform combos with this. You can easily carry an opponent up with you and proceed to try and strike them with a heavy blow in midair while they try to recover from the Screw Attack should you time your attack right.
