Unlockable Characters
Captain Falcon: Complete 1-Player mode on any difficulty, with any number of lives, and with any character. It's believed that you have to do it in under 15 minutes, but it has not been confirmed either way.
Jigglypuff: You can unlock Jigglypuff by simply beating 1-Player mode with any character.
Luigi: To unlock Luigi, you must defeat the target test stages for the 8 original characters.
Ness: To unlock Ness, you must finish 1-Player mode on normal difficulty (or higher), with three lives, and without using a continue with any character.
