[edit] Background

Ryu is a Japanese martial artist, and is the protagonist from the Street Fighter series, being one of the most recognizable characters from a fighting game. He specializes in Ansatsuken, and was one of the two students taught by master Gouken, the other being his friend Ken Masters. Ryu constantly wanders the Earth in search of new challenges, focused on perfecting his fighting style.

[edit] Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U

Ryu was released as a downloadable character on June 14, 2015, alongside Lucas and Roy. He comes bundled with the stage Suzaku Castle, based on his stage in Street Fighter II, at a price of $5.99 for one game, or $6.99 for both.

Ryu possesses the most unique control mechanics of any character, as he has a wider range of moves in his arsenal depending on how long the attack buttons are pressed. This was done in an attempt to somewhat mimic the six-button control scheme in Street Fighter games, used for weak, medium, and strong attacks. Tapping the A or B button for each attack gives a weak move, while holding them down gives a stronger move. He is also the only character with two different Final Smashes; Shin Shoryuken is a close-range Final Smash, while Shinku Hadoken is long-range.
