 Item Effect
The Hammer from the original Donkey Kong game, came to smash bros in Super Smash Bros. as a very powerful item. If you hit the same opponent 2-3 times they will most likely be knocked out. When the hammer came to Super Smash Bros. Melee the head of the hammer would sometimes fall off and you could pick it up. If you threw the head at someone it would cause them to go flying. Though this hammer returned to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a new version of the hammer called the Golden Hammer was introduced as a stronger, faster, and rarer hammer than the original. The head also falls off more often in Super Smash Bros. Brawl than it did in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
The Hammer is one of the strongest items in the game, so move to find people when you have it. Once your opponents have 60%+ damage, they have very little chances of surviving a single shot from your Hammer. However, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. The first being that your mobility is limited to one jump and you can't run. The second is situational, but if you face one of the Fire Emblem swordsmen, Marth and Ike, or Lucario they can use their down special technique to avoid a hit and retaliate with a counter-strike. This can be fatal as you can't use a midair jump with a Hammer. Also, Kirby's down special technique can get through one Hammer strike to hit you. When faced with the prospect of facing someone on a rampage with a Hammer, just run unless you are one of the four aforementioned characters. Use the limited mobility of the person wielding the hammer to your advantage. Characters that have high jumps like Falco and Luigi are ideal to get above an opponent wielding a Hammer while fast characters like Sonic and Fox can use their great speed to simply run away. In a nutshell, if you don't have a counter-strike move, just do whatever you can to stay away from an opponent wielding a Hammer.
