  Jan 26 2008 - Masterpieces in Brawl!

It's a battle royale between Nintendo's biggest superstars for dominance. That pretty much sums up Super Smash Bros. in a nutshell. However, have you ever stopped to consider the battles these legends of the video game world have had to endure to reach where they are today in the Super Smash Bros. games?

A new gameplay mode in Brawl allows you to do just that. Masterpieces gives you the chance to play trial versions of these games and more on the Virtual Console:

  • Super Mario Bros. - 1985, NES
  • Ice Climbers - 1985, NES
  • The Legend of Zelda - 1987, NES
  • Kid Icarus - 1987, NES
  • Kirby's Adventure - 1993, NES
  • Super Metroid - 1994, SNES
  • Star Fox 64 - 1997, N64

As mentioned previously, these are trials, so there will be a time limit. Once the time expires, you'll be taken back to Brawl. If you like the game from the time you spent on the demo, you're more than welcome to buy the full version from the Wii Shop channel.

Oct 05 2007 - This week in Brawl...

Welcome to another weekly recap of Brawl updates! We have new characters, new assist trophies and more movies than we've ever had in a single week before, so get yourself informed!

    Monday
    ----------

Lucas, from the MOTHER series, is announced. He looks a lot like Ness visually, but his powers appear different.

    Tuesday
    ----------

A double-update. First, a look at Snake's home stage, the Shadow Moses Island. This update, featuring a creepy metal fortress, also comes with some videos of Snake getting information from his comrades mid-match! Among wanting to eat Yoshi and get more intimate with Samus, Snake's dialog is both humorous and informative.

    Also today, Snake's opening movie.

    Wednesday
    ----------

Small, pixelated Excitebike riders are a new Assist Trophy. These little guys appear in large numbers and run opponents off the road!

    Thursday
    ----------

Another double-update. For Fox's Final Smash, he summons the Landmaster Tank, which he then hops into and drives. The Landmaster can fire lasers and yes, it can also do Barrel Rolls.

Also, details on Shielding are announced. Melee veterans know all about this.

    Friday
    ----------

The way to play the Subspace Emissary is expanded upon. You have a team of characters, which expands when you meet more throughout the course of the story. Co-op is also available for two players. Everything else seems very reminiscent of Melee's Adventure Mode.

And that's all the happenings this week in Brawl! See you next time.

Oct 01 2007 - This week in Brawl...

Welcome to "This week in Brawl"! I'll be recapping the entire week's worth of updates in this news post.

    Monday
    ----------
Trophies were unveiled. They appear virtually unchanged from Melee, aside from the obvious graphical update. The only new feature appears to be that they can now be selected and arranged in any positioning and order that you like. Some trophies shown include Oocoo, Cel-shaded Tingle and Petey Piranha.

    Tuesday
    ----------
Diddy Kong's final smash is shown off for the first time. Called the Rocketbarrel Barrage, Diddy takes flight using his jetpack and fires his peanut popgun towards the ground with increased power. He can be controlled left and right across the screen.

    Wednesday
    ----------
Mr. Resetti is the latest Assist Trophy. He appears on screen and doesn't really do much but lecture you. Really, its just more annoying than it is helpful, although his commentary is fairly humorous.

    Thursday
    ----------
The final smash of the Pokemon Trainer, called Triple Finish, is unveiled. Charizard, Ivysaur and Squirtle combine their three signature attacks into one, super effective beam, which hurts more the closer you are to them.

    Friday
    ----------
Tourney mode returns, virtually unchanged from Melee. The max limit still appears to be 64 players, and the rules look more customizable than they were in Melee. Sakurai also hints that they are working on a way to make it fun for single players. Online, perhaps?

And that's this week in Brawl! Nothing groundbreaking this week, but a lot of old favorites returned. See you next week!

After months of silence, Nintendo have finally begun to lift the veil on their upcoming addition to the much loved Super Smash Bros series.

Amidst a recent flurry of Wii information, Nintendo showed an updated Brawl trailer at their Nintendo World event that gave us some new insight into the game, showing much more in-game footage than what we saw back in May. Along with that, it confirmed a whole slew of new stages (and a couple of returning ones, Pokemon Stadium for example), and revealed a new character: Fox. While most people assumed he'd be playable anyway, Nintendo saw it fit to showcase him in his very own segment at the end of the trailer. Disappointing for anyone who was hoping for some actual new characters.

The trailer can be seen here, and is available for download on GameTrailers.com.
